"The Material World!"
Presented by: Pat Biliter, Geologist & Former BNC Vice President
In 1984 Madonna sang “we are living in a material world, and I am a material girl.” How true.
This talk will focus on the geologic origins of six raw materials—sand, salt, iron, copper, crude oil, and lithium—without which our modern age would be unthinkable and frankly impossible.
Ohio played an important role in at least two of them.
The industrial products created with these materials are so much a part of our everyday lives that we take them completely for granted, unaware of how rare they can be, who controls their sources, the jaw-dropping technologies behind producing them, and the secretive international companies who control the world supply of the essentials that surround us.
We start with geology, but hang on to your seats, because we’ll have to touch on human history, engineering, global economics, international conflict, dirty politics, environmental degradation, and even materials piracy along the way.
